Cursor vs Claude Code

The author runs a school community with over 10,000 AI developers and shipkit.ai, and has spent thousands of dollars testing AI coding tools.

The author's current AI coding stack is Cursor on the $20/month plan and Claude Code on the $100/month plan.

The author uses Cursor primarily as a fallback for monster tasks and for its unlimited tab completions, while Claude Code is used for all other coding work.

Claude Code's limits refresh on a 5-hour window, and on the $100 plan you get roughly 225 requests per 5 hours.

Claude Code's pricing is limited by both a 5-hour window and a total weekly usage limit, not by the number of tokens sent.

By working in multiple 5-hour sessions per day, the author gets over 600 requests daily on Claude Code and rarely hits the limit.

The most cost-effective budget strategy is the 'starter pack': Claude Code $20 plan, then rotate to Cursor free tier and Windsurf free tier when limits hit.

For a moderate budget (~$40/month), using Claude Code $20 + Cursor $20 gives 500 prompts, access to 1M context models, and minimal extra costs.

The recommended power user stack is Claude Code $100 Max + Cursor $20, which rarely hits limits and avoids the high per-request costs of heavy Cursor usage.

For a 'baller' with no budget constraint, the stack Claude Code $200 Max + Cursor $20 provides virtually unlimited AI coding.

The author once spent over $3,000 in a month using Cursor's max mode while building Shipkit, and estimates he would have saved half to three-quarters by using Claude Code $100 plan.

Upgrading Cursor beyond the $20 plan is not beneficial if you already use a high-tier Claude Code plan, because Cursor's value is the IDE and 1M context, not extra prompts.
